The magazine was first published in Los Angeles, California in 1927 as The American Dancer. In 1933, the magazine moved its offices to New York City during the Great Depression.
Dance Magazine is a monthly dance publication covering modern dance and ballet, as well as other forms of dance, including jazz, primarily in the United States.
William Como was the Editor-in-Chief of Dance Magazine after Lydia Joel’s editorship, beginning in 1967 and continuing through the years until his death in 1989. Como was also the founding editor of After Dark, an iconic queer New York-based monthly. After Dark covered everything cultural, high and low: dance, art, theater, film, celebrity, fashion, and city life.
